Every time I stop and pause in Semper Fi Hall in front of these USMC WW1 and WW2 helmets (the former showing the full impact of a day gone bad), as well as a letter received by a friend from a friend (who would not survive his next battle), I’m challenged to recommit myself to never allow Memorial Day, for me and mine, to devolve into a day to simply picnic and party.
I want to mark the day for what it is: a reminder that freedom is not free — and that many paid the ultimate sacrifice so that we might live our lives in freedom, in the greatest country that’s ever been.
What a gift to take it all in.
May it be a memorable Memorial Day for you and yours! ❤️ 🙏
