Among our growing number of students who have come to work and learn this summer is a lad from Washington DC named Titus. His earnestness and kindness made a mark on us.

At 14, he is already quite intent about his vocation: he wants to be a design engineer. So he stayed with us for 10 days to participate in some design-and-build experiences on the Homestead, and then he went to study with an engineer in Raleigh for another week before flying home at the end of his summer break. This is a model for learning much too neglected in our day and age.

Among other contributions, he helped design and build the hitching posts for Magnalia’s equestrian ministries with Kevin and Julia Shanahan from Riverbend Farm & Horse Company. What a blessing these hitching posts have already been!

We asked Titus to name what he helped create, as is our practice with volunteers who participate in creating new things here. He gave us his middle name, which is Hesed, and then stenciled it onto the rails:

Hesed Hitching Post

That word HESED is one of my favorite words in all the world of words. Hesed is a Hebrew word that is used in Scripture often where God’s covenantal love is described. Hesed is often translated in the context of God’s steadfast lovingkindness toward His children. We are to bind remembrance of that word ’round us, like a rope around a rail:

Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you. (Psalm 33:22)

We pray that the reminder of God’s steadfast lovingkindness on the Homestead’s Hesed Hitching Posts will spark thoughtful conversation, and be a blessing to the souls of those who visit here.
